When Halloween came, the children will be unable to hold oneself back to wearing be riotous with colour makeup suits all sorts of strange things, wearing a mask, carrying a lamp," Jack light" to go from door to door, adults to ask for holiday gifts. The most well-known symbol of Halloween is what these two -- fantastic "Jack light" and" trick or treat" the practical joke.Next to Christmas, Halloween is the most commercialized celebration in the United States and Canada. This ancient festival originated far from North America however, and centuries before the first European set foot on the continent. One of these festivals was called Samhain (pronounced Sha-Von) and it took place on October 31 through to November 1. During this period, it was believed that the boundaries between our world and the world of the dead were weakened, allowing spirits of the recently dead to cross over and possess the living. In Ireland, they originally also used turnips for their Jack Lanterns, but upon arriving in the new world, they discovered that pumpkins were abundant and easier to carve out. This yearly festival was adopted by the Roman invaders, who helped to propagate (传 播, 宣传)it throughout the rest of the world (and at that time, the Roman Empire was the world). The word Halloween itself actually comes from a contraction of All Hallows Eve, or All Saint‘s Day (November 1), which is a Catholic day of observance in honor of saints. This tradition was later brought to the North American continent by Irish immigrants who were escaping the Potato Famine in their homeland. In addition to the festival itself, the immigrants brought several customs with them, including one of the symbols most commonly associated with Halloween -- the Jack ‘O Lantern.

How did this peculiar custom originate? The word “Halloween” comes from All Hallows Eve. November 1, “All Hallows Day”(or “All Saints Day”), is a Catholic day of observance in honor of saints. It was believed that during the period from Oct. 31 through to Nov. 1, the boundaries between our world and the world of dead were weakened, allowing spirits of the recently dead to cross over and haunt the living. In order to make themselves and their homes less appealing to these spirits, the ancient Celts put out fire in their homes to make them cold and undesirable, and huge scared bonfires, where the people gathered to burn crops and animals as sacrifices to Gods. During the celebration, the Celts wore costumes, typically consisting of animal heads and skins, and attempted to tell each other’s fortune. When the celebration was over, they relit their hearth fires from the sacred bonfires to help protect them during the coming winter. They also dressed up in odd costumes and parade through their villages to scare off any recently departed souls who might be searching for bodies to inhabit. How did the custom of “trick-or-treat” come into being? On Nov. 2 early Christians would walk from village to village begging for “soul cakes”, made out of square pieces of bread with currants. The more soul cakes the beggars received, the more prayers they would promise to say on behalf of the dead relatives of the donors. The prayers, it was believed, could accelerate a soul’s passage to heaven. The practice, once referred to as “going-a-souling” was eventually taken up by children who would visit the houses in their neighborhood and be given apples, buns or money. During the Pioneer days of the American West, the housewives would give the children candy to keep from being tricked. The children would shout “Trick or Treat!”The jack-o’-lantern custom comes from Irish folklore. Jack, a notorious drunkard, tricked Satan into climbing a tree. Jack then carved an image of a cross in the tree trunk, trapping t

he devil up the tree. Jack make a deal with devil that, if he would never tempt him with alcohol again, he would let him down the tree. After Jack died, he was denied entrance to heaven because of his mischievous ways in life. He was also denied entrance to Hell because he had tricked the devil. Instead, the devil gave him a hollowed-out-turnips, with an ember inside, to light his way through the darkness. Originally, the Irish used turnips as their “Jack’s lanterns”. But when immigrants came to America, they found pumpkins were far more plentiful and easier to carve out than turnips. So the jack-o’-lantern in America was a hollowed-out pumpkin, lit with an ember.

Children in costumes race from house to house asking for treats. A carved pumpkin, called a jack-o’-lantern, grins from a porch as the children pass. According to legend, jack-o’-lanterns protect people in their homes from ghostly spirits. It’s all part of the fun on Halloween! The roots of Halloween stretch back thousands of years and borrow customs from several parts of the world. WHAT IS HALLOWEEN? Halloween is a holiday celebrated on October 31. By tradition, Halloween begins after sunset. Long ago, people believed that witches gathered together and ghosts roamed the world on Halloween. Today, most people no longer believe in ghosts and witches. But these supernatural beings are still a part of Halloween. The colors black and orange are also a part of Halloween. Black is a symbol for night and orange is the color of pumpkins. A jack-o’-lantern is a hollowed-out pumpkin with a face carved on one side. Candles are usually placed inside, giving the face a spooky glow. DRESSING IN COSTUMES Dressing in masks and costumes is a popular Halloween activity. Costumes can be traditional and scary, such as a witch’s pointy hat and black gown. Costumes may also have a modern flavor. Many children dress up as movie characters or a favorite superhero. But Halloween is not just for children. Many adults enjoy showing off their costumes at Halloween parties! TRICK-OR-TREATING Once in costume, children go from house to house saying “Trick or treat!” In the past, children might play a “trick” on people who did not give treats. They might pelt houses with eggs or old tomatoes, or play other pranks. Today, children’s cries of “Trick or treat!” are usually rewarded with candy. HOW HALLOWEEN GOT STARTED One of the oldest Halloween traditions comes from the ancient Celts, who lived in western and central Europe long ago. The Celts celebrated a holiday y called Samhain on October 31. After sunset that day, people believed that spirits of the dead would rise and walk the earth. The Celts made offerings of food and drink to keep the spirits away. Beginning about 2,000 years ago, the Roman Empire conquered many Celtic peoples. But Celtic traditions, including Samhain, remained strong in areas such as Ireland and Scotland, even after the Roman conquest. The Roman Catholic Church tried to replace Samhain in 835 with All Saints’ Day, a day to honor saints of the Church. The eve of All Saints’ Day is October 31. It is called Allhallows or Hallowmas by the Church. HOW DID HALLOWEEN COME TO AMERICA? Halloween first came to America with early settlers from Celtic areas in Europe, such as Ireland and Scotland. But other American settlers with strict religious beliefs, including the Puritans from England, rejected Halloween. The arrival of many Irish immigrants during the 1800s helped spread Halloween’s popularity. But by the late 1800s, fewer people believed in ancient superstitions of ghosts and witches. Halloween became more a h
